Your coolness and determination, your easy going ways and your great eye for detail have made your ride a real pleasure to follow. I thought you were in trouble when you disappeared from crazyguy after the Black Hills and I was real happy to find your own journal. I am recuperating from a major medical operation and hope to get back on my bike soon. You are an inspiration. Have a great summer, good luck in college. Best regards, --don Morgan3993@yahoo.com
Name: Mrs.Guillemette Date: June 04, 2006 Time: 10:02 AM Comments: Hello again Charlie, I too have been to Point Reyes and the view out to sea along that whole coast is gorgeous and I am re-living it through your journey. We stayed in Bodega Bay twice. Once on our cross country trip and once with my daughter (who is no longer with me-she died three years ago from breast cancer). She and I had gone away on a one time get-a-way to Bodega Bay and we rented a chalet up on the hill overlooking the bay and rented girl movies and had a fire in the fireplace (it was foggy and cool for us too) and I will always remember what a special time we had. Did you by chance see the school house on the hill where they filmed "The Birds"? Enjoy San Francisco and have a good trip home.
Name: Mrs. Robinson Date: June 04, 2006 Time: 06:43 AM Comments: Hi Charlie, Just amazing :) Love the photo taken on 6/2 "a little foggy". Sorry Jay and Ty weren't able to get there last night. I think the airport will be a little crowded with your fans on Tuesday night. Congratulations again!!!!

Name: Mrs.G Date: May 29, 2006 Time: 09:54 AM Comments: Hello Charlie, I lost the last week of your journey because I was invited to the Outer Banks, North Carolina. I had a whole week's worth of your notes to catch up on. My kids booked a house right on the beach in Carolla. The north end of the island is full of wild horses and is only accessed by four-wheel drive which they have. It was a wonderful get-a - way. We were right on the beach and we fished and beachcombed and swam in the pool and soaked in the hot tub. I booked the flight on Saturday afternoon and left Sunday morning. I have never in my life done something so spontaneously. I had a wonderful time with my family. I am so glad that you made it without any problems. You will remember this all your life and I wish you a long and prosperouse one. You have done something many people dream about but never have the courage to really do it. I wish you well. Name: Matt Date: May 20, 2006 Time: 08:16 AM Comments: Hey Charlie! Been keeping up with your trek, Ben Alexander told me about it. Great job, you're really carving your niche out there, believe me. I'm sure you may have planned for this, but it sounds like the area in Oregon you're heading through will have you landing in California somewhere north of a town called Doyle. Just as a traveling tip, they have slug races there. I'm not kidding, they actually race slugs and it's a big deal. However, the thing I was more interested in relaying is that around this time they have thunderstorms that hit out of nowhere, and they can get pretty intense, to include hail the size of softballs. Now, since it's typically warmer the hail tends to fall apart easily, but just the same, you'll not want to get caught in open with that going on. I believe there is a hotel on the outskirts of the town, and depending on your weather report, you may want to seek out shelter there. Good luck!

I loved your description of Yellowstone. It was just like being there again. We went with our two sons in 1980 (such a long time ago)It was so beautiful and it was nice to relive it all over again. I can't believe how much ground you cover in a day. When we went we towed our Holliday Trailer from New Hampshire but left it in Rapid City and headed west with our older son and family to Yellowstone. Your trip has brought back so many wonderful memories. We went in July and it was a lot warmer but there was still snow on the forth of July and the boys made snowballs. I just love reading your journal. So good luck and stay safe.

So I unpacked, downloaded my pictures, and then checked out your site. I'm very impressed, great job! I was sorry to read about your flat, that sucks I wish I could have helped, but hey it's all about the experience right? Just one correction though I'm sure someone beat me to it is that you saw Devils Tower not Devils Needle. And yes it is a monolithic formation. I have had the chance to see it, and it was awesome. I hope to someday climb it! Well I told all my climbing friends about you and your trip. They thought that what you are doing is amazing, 2 of them wish they could have had a chance to meet you. So I told them about your site so I'm sure they'll check you out. Thanks for mentioning me in your journal! I thought that was pretty cool! I wish you the best of luck! Ride safe! Name: Bonne Date: May 06, 2006 Time: 08:24 AM Comments: Hey Charlie! carlos & I get a lot of pleasure here in Mattapoisett checking out your website. Your pictures and journal entries give us a great sense of your progress, challenges and pleasures. The quick stories of the freindly and generous people you meet reinforces my sense of who Americans are... Now I know that Nebraska is not entirely flat... The South Dakota pictures reminded me of a biography I read about Theodore Roosevelt who had a ranch there and who also hunted buffalo there. I always used to wonder why he was on Mount Rushmore, now I know. Over the years he went there he realized how much damage unrestricted hunting and development was doing to the natural environment, and I guess thats where the concept of national parks and reserves came from. He was the president that set it all up. I also like to look at the guest book to see who is following your progress. Well, keep up the good work, and as you well know by now: "drink before you're thirsty, eat before you're hungry, and rest before you're tired!" Love, Bonne

Name: Mrs. G Date: April 23, 2006 Time: 04:49 PM Comments: Hi Charlie, I have been watching your progress and I surely wish you good luck. This is the one thing that I wanted to do when I retired. In l994 I set out on this same trip but a little more southerly and in a car. My goal was the Grand Canyon. Your route was a little more northerly for this time of year. We did see the Grand Canyon which was so breath- taking. We traveled around 9,000 miles and I took us a month. There is so much beauty in this country that so many people never see because they fly from one point to another. I will remember this trip for the rest of my life. I think you are a very brave young man to undertake this at your age and I wish you many happy memories when you are as old as I am. God Bless.

You are very lucky and fortunate to have this opportunity and experience. My wife Kathy and I use to ride quite a bit and know about the commitment this takes. I enjoyed your story about when you were small and you dad put you on the back of his bike. We did the same with our beautiful daughter Hayley. When I was younger(1974) I hitchhiked from NJ to California and back. A lot of people told me I was crazy and they were probably right thinking about what I know today. I made it safe and sound and met some of the greatest people and saw some outrageous places that would be hard to see by car. It was the experience of my life and I would not trade it for all the money in the world. We live in Aurora IL and you are welcome in our home. We will be camping May 5th, 6th and 7th so these days would not work. The night of the 7th could work if you are coming in after 6pm. I can be reached on my cell phone any time (630) 330-3747. We wish you a successful and inspiring trip and will be thinking about you.

Maybe you can look up the word "life" and then proceed to get one. You are one of those people who I hate and yes i am judging you through the comments you posted, it says alot about your character you're one of those people who has been there and done that and knows more then everyone else but mostly you're a pest, a little meaningless nothing. You are jealous of Charlie because he has this website and so many people who support and love him, who are you? Oh ya we already went over this, a "nothing." You should prolly pick on kids who are doing something s****y with their lives like drugs or failing out of school not someone who has chosen to do something possitive for himself.Name: Al Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 06:20 PM Comments: Hey Charlie, I really admire your drive to embark on a journey like this, I've always wanted to do something like this when I was 15 (much older now!). Keep your focus man and don't be distracted by individuals like the guy who posted the ignorant comments. I am going to do the same thing in 2 years myself with my wife and kids, need to wait till my youngest is 9. Will be doing the tandem bike thing. Just be careful out there on the roads esp with the drivers who got their drivers licence from the 5 and Dime store. If you were passing through Texas you could stay here but that is to far south for you. I will be checking in to see how you are doing. One thing though, be careful with the weather further west. Take care, Al from Texas.Name: Postscript from Nguoi Bang Quan Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 05:52 PM Comments: Postscript: While I was in bed sleeping, both two phones were ringing simultaneously and very loud that caused my attention and was a perfect time for work. Guess what’s happened? This person was talking with an angry voice and judged me like a mean teacher regarding my post on your website. They said that I was wasting my time to suggest a thing that called, “None of your business.” Through out the day, I felt very bad and was disappointed because I thought I gave useful advice; unfortunately, it was scolded. Therefore, I decided to repost my last thoughts and wanted to apologize; however, I do not feel that I was wrong. It was just a different opinion about two-way talk and discussion about the pros and cons. I am actually wasting my time again, but I choose to. The story began when I coincidently read a newspaper and interested article caused my attention about a big-heart young man who dreams to cross the country. I curiously visited your website with one thing in mind was to share my experience, to give an opinion and to comment the goodness and sadness. In fact, I am temporary as a bad role to most of people so far, but I believe it sooner or later will be worthy to young fellows and probably not to you. Based on some of your friends have represented your town to speak up and back you up, I think I was wrong about you and I all hope that I actually was. Perhaps, I may not know you well enough. If I knew that this website was just for family and closed friends to comment ONLY, I would not post my comment up. True words from a bottom of my heart were difficult to listen, but anyhow if I did say something that discouraged you, please accept my apology and please take down my comment. Please keep doing what you dream off and ignore this stranger. God bless you! Nguoi Bang QuanName: Forkey Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 05:45 PM Comments: Charlie, you're frickin AMAZING. Charlie is eighteen, and like most other eighten year olds he is just starting to learn about himself. I guarantee he will learn more about himself in his trip than those who criticise him will learn of themselves in five years. The greatest gift that Charlie is giving all of us is the knowledge of what is possible if we put our minds to it. If you've met anyone who has been in the military, most will tell you they loved the experience. Why? Because they learned they were capable of things beyond their dreams, beyond the criticism of others. Learn from Charlie and live your dreams.Name: Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 12:18 PM Comments: i find it funny the kid, yea im positive he is a kid ur age, to that kid you going to critism my friend for not being responible but you being anoymous are not going to take responibilty for your own comments...ps if you believe charlie did this for fame or attention obviously your havnt spent more then ten minutes with him, now your just looking for attention posting negative unnecessary comments.Name: Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 11:44 AM Comments: As to comments by Nguoi Bang Quan, I say, just keep the part where it says, "Disregard my justification if it does not make sense to you." Because it really doesn't make sense. Your trip, especially alone and unsupported, will provide the perspective and education to handle the rest of life's burdon's and responsibilities, not avoid them.Name: FARIA Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 10:53 AM Comments: BLOOD.......i love you man...hope you had a good time at my uncles house.....GOOD LUCK FARIAName: Anonymous Date: April 12, 2006 Time: 10:52 AM Comments: I think the gentleman who made the negative comment was a little upset because he had a situation in his own life that was very similar in regards to Charlies cross country expedition. After reading his little narrative, I took from it a tone of jealousy, and as he continued to write he realized his guilt and ended it on a better note. I agree with Courtney, that it is very different if you know Charlie and his character, but to judge someone to be selfish in a public atmospehere is the only selfish attitude I see within this. He spent a lot of time speaking of the financial burden on the trip, and to me it seems like this man would like to take a similar leap that Charlie is taking and do something that you dont normally do that would be a lot of fun. On another note, Charlie isnt a high school grad who just decided to skip college and go bike riding, but he took advantage of an oppourtunity to graduate 5 months before the rest of his class so he could have this time to bike from coast to coast, which is something he really wanted to do. What he is doing has drawn a lot of attention and support merely because of friends and family spreading the word. Charlie is by no means selfish, he did not ask for this attention, he recieved it, and is grateful for it. Keep up the spirit, the drive and the enthusiasm to realize your dream; you know, I'm sure, that goals worthy of our efforts to accomplish them do not necessarily come easy but the sweetness and satisfaction in reaching them far outweigh the setbacks and discouragement we must overcome to get there. Good Luck and stay dry.Name: Nguoi Bang Quan Date: April 11, 2006 Time: 12:09 PM Comments: Quickly looking at your web site: It sounds like hero to small mind and maybe to middle mind people. Just graduated from high school and what else? What’s about college, job and live your own life? Wanted to be famous too soon. If this is not your scope and goal to show off then do not rely on other people supports. Selfishly, while people are all working, you are spending money and enjoying wasting of your time for unrealistic plan. Please do not make your parents, relatives and closed friends worry about you and wasting their time to keep track of your effort daily. I have nothing to against what you want to accomplish of your dream, but be real and practical. I wish you succeeded. Your web site did not mention about physical preparation. I guess that you have reviewed and been aware of all required criteria to be optimistically succeeded. Be prepare does not cost you a life and a shame once you fail. Theoretically, regardless of bad weather, a place to rest, get lost during your route and lots of other possibility that can affect you along your journey, If I was you, I must at lease test my muscular ability four (4) months before April 1st, so I could at lease have time to recoup. I have a question for you: did you calculate and evaluate your ability by riding a bike with a same weight factor for 52 mile/day on everyday for 77 days (4000/77=52. start 4/1 and end 6/16=77)? If you did this without any permanent damage to your musculatures then you meet my initial criteria. Once you pass this initial trial, you do not need luck because you already calculated and evaluated it and all the bottom line that you will need are as follows: $3,080.00 ($40 per night at motel 6 x 77=3080), $924.00 ($6 per meal, twice a day at McDonald including a retained water 6x2x77=924), $300.00 (new bike/new tire and/or accessories). A total amount you need is $4,304.00 for your long-term vacation. More money is better, but you need to hide it in your bike’s body frame not in your thick attractive wallet. Suddenly, I am wondering and laughing at myself about instead of riding bicycle, I stay at a library everyday pretending I am on the trip and exaggeratedly update my website on day and party at a night club with cool chicks for 77 days. Oh my God! This is a great vacation! As a result, there is no pain at my muscular, joints, be famous, be a crook and a coward inside. Who know and care as many American used to say. I guess you don’t want to do that. You have a big heart. You want a real famous, and a hero in you regardless what people think. This successful journey is as a beginning of the others. Keep it up! Be strong! You have at lease 60 more years to live. You will have to live with your own family not relying on your parents any more. Wish you the best of luck with your life and continue doing thing that help others not to worry them. I wish I know you better. Disregard my justification if it does not make sense to you. Again, you don’t need luck…luck is on your own hands. Do only what you can and at lease a try to learn a limit and tolerate yourself to challenge your innocent curiosity. People will grow up strongly and faster without relying on other supports, but do accept some minimized support once you fail and need to back up. You are a treasure of your parents. You’re successful is your parents’ success. Bye! Ky ten, Nguoi Bang QuanName: Cathy from Illinois Date: April 11, 2006 Time: 10:38 AM Comments: Great job ! Hope you have a wonderful time! See you at GRADUATION!!!!Name: The London Family Date: April 02, 2006 Time: 04:50 PM Comments: Dear Charlie~ I am a friend of Nancy Keay. We work for the same fundraising company. She has asked that I pass on the story of your trek to many of us that keep in touch by email. Don't be surprised if many "mothers" across the states invite you to stay! We might live on the final lap of your trip, as I live in San Luis Obispo County, in California. It is the most beautiful part of the country- you can see elephant seals migrating up the coast but stopping to bear offspring, beaches you can walk, drive or campfire on, and many miles of opened space scattered with vineyards (and lots of wineries!) or grazing cows (not many vegetarians around here!). So, please keep our contact information and plan on a home cooked meal, warn shower and soft bed for a night. Good luck on your adventure...I don't know if I could let my 17 year old travel as you are. My hat off to your mother!
